Church Hurt — they hurt you in God’s house. That was never God.

Jesus said this to crowds who had been worn out by religious leaders piling heavy rules and burdens on them. So this invitation lands directly on anyone hurt in a religious place.

Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Notice He does not defend the people who wore you out. He offers Himself as the alternative to them.

Then He tells you what He is actually like: humble and gentle at heart. That is the opposite of the harshness that hurt you. The leaders may have been proud and heavy-handed. Jesus is not, and He is careful to say so.

My yoke is easy, my burden is light. The people who hurt you may have made faith feel crushing. Jesus says walking with Him is not supposed to feel like that. Do not let what they did define what He is like.

This is God speaking, and He is furious, but not at the wounded. He is confronting the shepherds, the leaders of His people, for how they treated the flock.

You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have ruled them harshly and brutally. Let that sink in. God Himself puts into words the exact thing that was done to you, and He calls it what it is. Harsh. Brutal. Wrong.

This matters because church hurt can make you feel like God signed off on it, like He was on their side. He was not. In this chapter God is against the leaders who wounded His people, and later in it He says He will come and shepherd them Himself.

So your wound is not invisible to God, and it is not endorsed by Him. He sees bad shepherding for what it is, He is angry about it on your behalf, and He means to tend the sheep they hurt personally.

After what happened, this line matters in a specific way. The wound you carry was often given in God’s name, by His people, in His house. That is a particular kind of broken heart.

He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. God does not treat a spiritual wound as less real because it came from inside the church. A wound is a wound to Him, and He moves to heal it.

Bandages is a close-up, gentle word. The care He offers is the opposite of the harshness that hurt you. He does not rush you, shame you for still hurting, or tell you to just get over it and get back in the building.

So you can bring Him the wound His people caused, and He will not flinch or defend them. He bandages. Let the gentle God tend what harsh hands tore, at whatever pace that healing needs.
