Depression and Faith — when everything feels heavy, God is closer than the heaviness.

David wrote this psalm after a stretch on the run, a season so desperate he once pretended to be insane just to survive. So the man writing about God being close to the brokenhearted knew the bottom personally.

And read what it actually claims. Not that God tolerates the brokenhearted from a distance. That He is close to them. Depression tells you that you are too far gone and God has quietly backed away. This verse says the exact opposite.

He rescues those whose spirits are crushed. Crushed is a heavy word, and God does not ask you to un-crush yourself first. He comes to the crushed as they are.

So if He feels far tonight, that feeling is not the fact. You do not have to climb up to Him. He has already come down to where you are.

These lines sit in the middle of Lamentations, a whole book of grief written while the writer’s city lay in ruins. This is not a happy man. This is hope found at the actual bottom.

And look where he lands: the faithful love of the Lord never ends, his mercies never cease. Not because things got better. They had not. But because God’s character does not run out even when everything else does.

Then the line people hold onto: his mercies begin afresh each morning. Depression makes every day feel like the same gray weight. This promises something new is waiting at sunrise, mercy you have not spent yet.

So sometimes the most faith-filled thing you can do is just get to tomorrow morning. There is fresh mercy there with your name on it. You have not used it up.

The writer of this psalm is deeply low, and he does something worth copying. He talks to his own soul instead of only listening to it.

Why, my soul, are you downcast? He does not pretend he feels fine. He names the heaviness honestly, out loud, to himself. But he does not stop at the feeling.

Then he preaches to himself: put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him. That word yet is doing everything. Not I feel great right now, but I will yet, there is a coming day this heaviness does not get the final say over.

So tonight, do what he did. You have been listening to your soul all day. Turn around and speak to it. Remind it, out loud if you have to, where its hope actually is.
